Job Description
Senior DevOps contractor building RWS’s AWS-based self-service VM provisioning platform. Establishing Terraform, Ansible, GitHub Actions, and Backstage engineering patterns.
Responsibilities:
- Lead delivery of the Phase 1 AWS pipeline end to end, including repository scaffolding, Terraform compute module, Ansible configuration, remote state, validation tooling, and provisioning workflow
- Own Terraform and Ansible architecture and the handoff between infrastructure provisioning and machine configuration
- Keep every VM’s state declarative and reproducible
- Build the GitOps flow on GitHub Actions with OIDC-based, keyless AWS authentication and least-privilege IAM
- Implement TTL-based expiry and decommissioning, PR-driven resizing, and snapshot/restore
- Expose the pipeline as a Backstage Software Template
- Produce the JSON schema and documentation required for the Backstage integration
- Mentor and upskill the internal DevOps engineer
- Run structured knowledge transfer so the internal team can operate and extend the platform independently
- Coordinate with Networking, AD/Identity, Security, and Operations dependency owners to unblock delivery
Requirements:
- Deep, hands-on infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform
- Configuration management experience with Ansible, including fluency in the handoff between Terraform and Ansible
- Proven track record building end-to-end provisioning and lifecycle pipelines
- Hands-on cloud engineering across compute, storage, IAM/identity, and networking
- AWS experience preferred, or demonstrable equivalent depth on another hyperscaler
- CI/CD pipeline-as-code experience with GitHub Actions and OIDC federation
- GitOps / PR-driven workflows experience
- Deep Windows Server and Active Directory experience
- Python experience for validation and tooling
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Effective collaboration in a distributed team
- Genuine track record of mentoring engineers and transferring ownership
