Job Description

Senior Policy Advisor conducting research on policies and providing strategic advice for Mitacs’ innovation and talent development programs. Engaging closely with government and educational sectors in Canada.

Responsibilities:

  • Research and forward-looking analysis on strategic policy
  • Conduct original public policy research, environmental scans and jurisdictional analyses to inform Mitacs’ long-term direction and objectives.
  • Identify new opportunities in policy areas related to research, innovation, talent development and the economy that could shape Mitacs’ programs and partnerships.
  • Explain how emerging federal or provincial priorities could affect Mitacs and provide actionable recommendations for organizational alignment.
  • Provide evidence-based policy advice that supports the organization’s transformation and modernization, and aligns it with stakeholder expectations.
  • Identify policy gaps, risks and opportunities to strengthen Mitacs’ position within the innovation ecosystem.
  • Develop strategic insights to help senior leadership make decisions about new directions, partnerships and funding opportunities.
  • Work with the Programs team to interpret evaluation data and recommend programs to expand, modify or retire.
  • Contribute to theories of change, logic models and other key policy documents.

Requirements:

  • Graduate degree in public policy, economics, political science, sociology or a related field, preferred.
  • 5–8+ years of experience in policy analysis, public sector research, strategic planning or government-related roles.
  • Proven experience conducting original public policy research to inform strategy and program design.
  • Strong understanding of government decision-making processes, funding mechanisms and public sector priorities.
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex data into compelling narratives.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is required, as you will interact with colleagues, clients and stakeholders across Canada.
  • Experience contributing to organizational strategy or transformation initiatives is a strong asset.
  • Comfortable working with data, evaluation findings and both qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Knowledge of public policy related to innovation, research and economic development is an asset.
