Job Description

Senior Product Designer shaping social features across Chess.com’s web and mobile chess platform. Designing polished experiences for player connection, messaging, profiles, and community engagement.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead end-to-end design of high-impact product experiences across Chess.com’s web, iOS, and Android apps
  • Deliver polished, production-ready UI designs
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Design, and other stakeholders to shape requirements, clarify ambiguity, and influence product and design direction
  • Design features that help players connect and socialize, including Home, Profile, Friends, Messaging, Notifications, Leaderboards, and more
  • Think across features and the broader design system to improve consistency, usability, and quality
  • Raise the craft bar through strong UI design, thoughtful interactions, and sound product judgment
  • Identify product opportunities beyond the immediate brief and develop design direction
  • Present design proposals, articulate decisions, navigate differing perspectives, and align cross-functional partners
  • Build and iterate high-fidelity prototypes using the Design System, Cursor, and Claude
  • Contribute to design critiques and provide constructive feedback to Product Designers
  • Maintain design ownership through implementation and ensure design-to-code alignment across platforms

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience working as a Product Designer on a consumer-facing product or game
  • Portfolio of polished web and mobile UI design work demonstrating excellent craft, strong product thinking, and accountability
  • Mastery of UI design fundamentals, including typography, color, layout, visual hierarchy, alignment, contrast, interactivity, and user experience heuristics
  • Experience using agentic tools like Cursor and Claude to build shareable prototypes and quickly iterate on ideas
  • Demonstrated experience owning complex product work from early problem definition through implementation
  • Strong Design system fluency
  • Track record of influencing product and design decisions, presenting proposals clearly, and navigating cross-functional disagreement or competing priorities
  • Familiarity with frontend development and how design translates into code across web and mobile platforms
  • Strong written and verbal communication, proactive remote collaboration, and judgment to operate effectively with autonomy and ambiguity
  • Preferred: love for chess and knowledge of Chess.com and its product experience
  • Preferred: experience designing social features for mobile games or consumer products
  • Preferred: motion design experience
  • Preferred: design engineering or frontend development experience on web, iOS, or Android
