Job Description
Affirm backend engineer building a scalable reliability platform for its buy-now-pay-later services. Designing production systems with distributed systems, cloud, database, Kubernetes, and AI-assisted development technologies.
Responsibilities:
- Design and build a next-generation reliability platform for Affirm’s production systems
- Own and deliver quarterly goals for the team
- Lead engineers through ambiguous, open-ended problems and support them throughout delivery
- Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics during ideation and decision-making
- Articulate technical constraints and evaluate risks and trade-offs
- Identify and lead resolution of project, process, technology, and business issues
- Support operations and availability by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and participating in keep-the-lights-on and on-call efforts
- Set and improve code review and design standards
- Advocate for quality and ownership through writing and tech talks
- Develop team talent through feedback, guidance, and leading by example
Requirements:
- 4+ years of experience as a software engineer
- Experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale
- Experience with Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
- Experience shipping web apps using declarative UI frameworks such as React or Vue
- Practical use of LLMs or AI frameworks for automation and guidance with guardrails and citations
- Experience defining technical plans for significant features or system components
- Ability to write high-quality, understandable, and reusable code
- Proficiency making significant changes in large codebases safely
- Experience developing tools and practices to support safe large-scale code changes
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with global engineering teams
- Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- Must reside in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan
