Job Description

Affirm backend engineer building a scalable reliability platform for its buy-now-pay-later services. Designing production systems with distributed systems, cloud, database, Kubernetes, and AI-assisted development technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and build a next-generation reliability platform for Affirm’s production systems
  • Own and deliver quarterly goals for the team
  • Lead engineers through ambiguous, open-ended problems and support them throughout delivery
  • Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics during ideation and decision-making
  • Articulate technical constraints and evaluate risks and trade-offs
  • Identify and lead resolution of project, process, technology, and business issues
  • Support operations and availability by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and participating in keep-the-lights-on and on-call efforts
  • Set and improve code review and design standards
  • Advocate for quality and ownership through writing and tech talks
  • Develop team talent through feedback, guidance, and leading by example

Requirements:

  • 4+ years of experience as a software engineer
  • Experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale
  • Experience with Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
  • Experience shipping web apps using declarative UI frameworks such as React or Vue
  • Practical use of LLMs or AI frameworks for automation and guidance with guardrails and citations
  • Experience defining technical plans for significant features or system components
  • Ability to write high-quality, understandable, and reusable code
  • Proficiency making significant changes in large codebases safely
  • Experience developing tools and practices to support safe large-scale code changes
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with global engineering teams
  • Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Must reside in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan
