Job Description
Senior backend engineer building Affirm’s reliability platform for scalable buy-now-pay-later systems. Designing distributed services, AI-assisted tooling, and operational safeguards for production health.
Responsibilities:
- Design and build a next-generation reliability platform for Affirm’s production systems
- Own and deliver quarterly goals for the team
- Lead engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems and support delivery
- Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics during ideation and product development
- Articulate technical constraints and partner on decisions considering risks and trade-offs
- Identify and lead resolution of project, process, technology, and business issues
- Create and monitor metrics, escalate issues, and support operations, availability, keep-the-lights-on, and on-call efforts
- Set and improve code review and design standards
- Advocate for quality and ownership through writing and tech talks
- Develop team talent through feedback, guidance, and leading by example
Requirements:
- 4+ years of experience as a software engineer
- Experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale
- Experience with technologies such as Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
- Experience shipping web apps using declarative UI frameworks such as React or Vue
- Practical use of LLMs or AI frameworks for automation and guidance with guardrails and citations
- Experience defining technical plans for significant features or system components with elegant, simple, extensible designs
- Ability to write high-quality, understandable, reusable code
- Proficiency making significant changes in large codebases
- Suite of tools and practices enabling safe changes to large codebases
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with a global engineering team
- Either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
