Job Description
Senior Software Engineering Manager leading multiple engineering teams at Nelnet Business Services. Focused on performance management, mentoring, and supporting technology and product strategy.
Responsibilities:
- Coaches, motivates, and professionally develops direct reports and others.
- Sets clear team objectives and measurements aligned with organizational goals.
- Responsible for performance evaluations and recommending compensation changes.
- Builds and strengthens teamwork and cooperation within and across teams.
- Implements lean solutions to improve team efficiency while maintaining effectiveness.
- Removes organizational impediments including hidden challenges.
- Assesses and improves team health.
- Creates a culture that makes room for failure and learning.
- Leads the hiring process for team members.
- Contributes to department staffing plans and budget processes.
- Coordinate with Nelnet Cyber Security Group (CSG) to ensure that NBS is compliant with all Nelnet security policies.
- Creates engineering standards in coding practices across teams.
- Mentors Software Engineers in best practices.
- Creates an environment of best practices in engineering through personal example, developing and engineering products, creating deployments, and leading system architecture design concepts across teams.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience in IT Team area with a demonstrated ability of successful team leadership.
- 2+ years of experience in management role.
- Proficiency in Python & Java required.
- Experience with AWS deployments required.
- Experience with auto scaling design.
- Experience deploying AI models in Bedrock framework.
- Experience using AI coding assistants (Claude, Cursor, etc...).
- Experience in developing MCP and API custom connectors.
