Job Description

Senior engineering manager leading high-performing software teams at Mercury Insurance. Driving scalable, secure applications, roadmap delivery, and technical strategy for insurance products.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and manage highly motivated, high-performing software engineering teams
  • Hire, mentor, and motivate staff
  • Drive budgeting and planning for the area of responsibility
  • Collaborate with product managers to estimate effort, prioritize the roadmap, plan, and deliver roadmap items
  • Translate product requirements into robust, modular, configurable, reusable, fast, user-friendly, secure, compliant, scalable, and maintainable designs
  • Lead teams hands-on to deliver new or improved features and address delivery impediments
  • Collaborate with teams and stakeholders to ensure successful delivery
  • Review product requirements, designs, and code for quality and adherence to best practices
  • Ensure application systems are secure, compliant, performant, and up to date
  • Identify system and process improvement opportunities
  • Drive new features, large refactors or migrations, and process changes
  • Leverage CI/CD and process optimization to improve time to market
  • Stay current with industry trends and drive adoption of best practices
  • Assist in developing Mercury’s technical vision, strategy, and innovation for application systems
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and excellence

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or other related fields Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10+ years of Software engineering experience with 5+ years leading and managing staff
  • Experience leading customer-facing digital experiences across multiple surfaces or channels
  • Strong full-stack product engineering background
  • Experience leveraging existing backend APIs and defining frontend-to-platform contracts
  • Experience building reusable frameworks or components
  • Insurance domain experience is a plus
  • Proven ability to drive engineering best practices, operational excellence, and organizational discipline across teams
  • Proficient in building and managing large, high-performing software engineering teams
  • Experienced in hiring and developing next-level managers and leaders
  • Proficient in project management, including estimating, planning, executing, tracking, and reporting progress
  • Proficient in leading multiple engineering teams across mobile, web, backend, data, and other technology stacks
  • Experienced in designing and implementing distributed application systems
  • Proficient with APIs, messaging, data streaming, workflow, integration frameworks, microservices, containers, and cloud computing
  • Experience maximizing use of open-source libraries
  • Experienced in leveraging DevSecOps
  • Experienced in leveraging analytics data and experimentation
  • Experience leading transformative initiatives such as digital transformation, omni-channel implementation, legacy migration, cloud transformation, modernization, product development, and AI/ML adoption
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong ability to collaborate with and influence cross-functional teams and stakeholders
  • Experienced in operational excellence, quality, performance, scalability, maintainability, and observability
  • Experienced in driving technical strategy, vision, and innovation
  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science preferred
  • Experience building software for P&C Insurance Business preferred
