Job Description

Forestry certification specialist auditing forest management and chain-of-custody compliance for SCS Global Services, a sustainability standards and certification leader. Making certification decisions and supporting auditors, clients, and quality programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct robust and detailed Forest Management and Chain of Custody audits
  • Perform audits in forest, industrial, and urban settings, including timber companies, government land managers, sawmills, pellet mills, furniture manufacturers, paper distributors, and printers
  • Generate high-quality audit reports with accurate, detailed, and consistent descriptions of evidence and findings
  • Assess organizations’ management practices against applicable certification standards
  • Interpret and implement certification program requirements while maintaining scheme integrity
  • Review audit reports for oversight and quality control
  • Make certification decisions to grant, maintain, reduce, expand, suspend, or terminate certification based on conformity evidence
  • Support auditor training and performance evaluation
  • Implement changes affecting certification and monitor client non-conformances
  • Ensure implementation of program procedures and documents
  • Perform witness and internal audits as needed
  • Coordinate audit processes with clients and stakeholders
  • Ensure clients provide necessary data and information
  • Provide customer service throughout the audit process and address certification-related questions year-round
  • Track client files and records in folders and databases
  • Communicate policies, procedures, and requirements to clients, auditors, and affiliate staff
  • Support development of external communications and auditor training materials
  • Support departmental quality programs and quality initiatives
  • Aid development of internal procedures and guidelines
  • Support monitoring accreditation and internal non-conformances

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in forestry, natural resources, ecology, or a related field
  • 5+ years of professional experience in forestry, natural resource management, or a related field
  • Applied experience in auditing and/or quality assurance
  • Qualification as lead Forest Management and Chain of Custody auditor for FSC, SFI, and other relevant schemes such as PEFC and SBP
  • Fluency in English with professional and technical verbal and written communication experience
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong customer service and teamwork orientation
  • Proficiency with Outlook, Word, Excel, and database management
  • Initiative, good judgment, and ability to work independently in a team environment
  • Ability to work in the US
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally for audits as needed
  • Preferred: professional forester license, such as licensed/registered forester
  • Preferred: Society of American Foresters Certified Forester or Canadian Institute of Forestry equivalent
