Job Description
VP Engineering leading Hazelcast’s open-source, Java-based real-time data platform from the UK. Defining technology strategy, scaling global engineering, and driving enterprise delivery.
Responsibilities:
- Define and champion a multi-year technology strategy and architectural vision aligned with business objectives and revenue growth
- Collaborate with Product Management on product strategy, roadmap prioritization, technical direction, packaging, commercial value, and delivery
- Own end-to-end engineering delivery against the product roadmap using agile methodologies
- Maintain and elevate platform quality, performance, security, and resilience
- Provide executive oversight of distributed systems, high-performance Java, concurrency, streaming, and data structures
- Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies
- Manage the engineering budget, technology investment ROI, and resource allocation
- Steward Hazelcast’s open-source core and balance open-source community expectations with commercial customer needs
- Advocate for Hazelcast within open-source and real-time data ecosystems and build strategic partnerships
- Convert user feedback into engineering priorities
- Maintain reliability across Hazelcast’s multi-language client ecosystem and seamless upgrades
- Champion developer and operator experience, documentation, release clarity, and community engagement
- Lead and manage a distributed global engineering team
- Develop organisational structure, headcount planning, leadership bench, succession plans, and career paths
- Coach and develop engineering directors and managers
- Ensure team alignment, empowerment, feedback, and performance management
- Partner with the CEO and C-level executives on engineering performance, risks, and opportunities
- Sponsor key enterprise accounts and participate in high-stakes C-level prospect meetings with Sales
- Inspire advanced developers globally and foster contributions to open-source projects
Requirements:
- 12+ years of progressive leadership experience in software engineering
- At least 7+ years operating at VP, SVP, or CTO level
- Preferably experience in a B2B enterprise software or platform company
- Experience fostering a product-led culture and driving commercial results through engineering excellence
- Ability to manage large departmental budgets and optimize engineering spend
- Ability to translate complex technical decisions into business value for executive stakeholders
- Deep understanding of complex architectures, concurrent and distributed systems, high-performance compute, and real-time data architectures
- Expertise balancing open-source community expectations with enterprise requirements
- Experience with public API discipline, documentation standards, governance, and global developer/operator communities
- Track record scaling and leading a geographically distributed international engineering organisation
- Technical foundation in Java, concurrency, networking, data streaming, SQL, distributed data stores, and data grids
- Ability to engage deeply with Principal Engineers and Architects on complex technical designs
- Expertise in modern agile methodologies and continuous delivery pipelines
- Customer-centric approach and comfort working in an open-kitchen, GTM-aligned environment
- Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skills
- Ability to influence across Product, Engineering, Sales, and Marketing
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline is listed as preferred; Master's or equivalent advanced degree preferred
