Job Description
Contributing Writer producing reported stories about young bipartisan lawmakers for Future Caucus, a national organization supporting emerging elected leaders. Managing interviews, research, editing, and publication for its Young Lawmakers’ Storybank.
Responsibilities:
- Own the editorial pipeline for Future Caucus' Young Lawmakers' Storybank
- Research, report, write, and edit approximately 12–13 narrative articles over the contract term on a biweekly schedule
- Identify and pitch story leads from video content, policy tracking, news coverage, legislative activity, social media, staff input, events, and member milestones
- Schedule and conduct interviews with young state and federal lawmakers from both parties
- Manage articles through pitching, drafting, revisions, lawmaker review, and publication
- Maintain the Storybank editorial tracker with story status, sources, and publication timelines
- Write across content streams including Anatomy of a Bill, Policy Impacts, Profiles of Effective Lawmakers, and event recaps
- Fact-check articles and follow AP style and Future Caucus editorial and brand guidelines
- Flag standout quotes, moments, and visuals for social media amplification
- Coordinate with the Communications team and program staff
- Attend editorial check-ins, edits, and consultations during 12–4 p.m. ET core hours
- Perform other related duties as needed
Requirements:
- 3+ years of professional experience in features, narrative, or storytelling-driven writing
- Experience conducting interviews for published work and eliciting compelling quotes and anecdotes
- Portfolio of published articles, newsletter or blog posts, or ghostwritten work
- Ability to take writing projects independently from concept to publication with minimal editing
- Strong command of AP style or ability to follow a house style guide
- Deep interest in and working knowledge of U.S. politics at state and federal levels
- Ability to write about Republican and Democratic lawmakers with equal fairness, accuracy, and curiosity
- Self-directed and highly organized; able to manage a pipeline, meet deadlines, and communicate proactively
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and integrity when working with lawmakers and staff
- Passion for bipartisan cooperation and cross-partisan dialogue
- Resume and three to five published clips required for application
- Flexibility to schedule interviews around legislators' schedules
