Job Description
Docs Team Lead leading technical writers and owning API documentation for Payabli’s embedded payments fintech platform. Building docs tooling, agent resources, and release documentation.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and mentor two technical writers, including 1:1s, career development, and ownership clarity
- Run team rituals, including quarterly goal setting, backlog grooming, PTO and coverage planning, writing workshops, and blog posts
- Own the API reference for Payabli’s embedded payments API across Pay In, Pay Out, and Pay Ops
- Own information architecture, docs CI/CD, style guide, and linting rules
- Use AI agents in daily documentation workflows with human review gates
- Review documentation pull requests before subject matter expert review and serve as the final human quality gate
- Triage engineering and product work daily, convert it into prioritized documentation tickets with ship dates, and delegate work
- Ship documentation with every monthly production release, including API changelogs, release notes, and feature launch documentation
- Maintain published SLAs and release tiers and communicate schedule slips to stakeholders
- Own Payabli’s public agent skills plugin and related skills, agent instructions, and tooling
- Publish a monthly State of the Docs report using product analytics, AI chat, and search data
- Track team velocity, post-release documentation work, and AI answer coverage; set targets
- Report to the CTO
Requirements:
- 8+ years in technical writing or developer documentation, with real API reference experience
- Experience leading or mentoring technical writers
- Deep OpenAPI experience
- Experience with docs-as-code workflows using Git, pull requests, CI and Markdown/MDX
- Ability to read API responses, write scripts in TypeScript or Python, and build docOps tools
- Hands-on experience using AI coding agents in a docs workflow, with judgment about where they fail
- Habit of verifying everything and saying “I don’t know yet” instead of guessing
- Clear written communication, async-first
- Payments or fintech experience is nice to have
- Experience with Fern or a similar docs and SDK platform is nice to have
- Portfolio showing API documentation written and docs tooling built is nice to have
- Strongly preferred: portfolio site
