Job Description
Engineering Manager leading software and QA teams for Plume’s trans-focused telehealth platform. Balancing people leadership with hands-on coding, quality strategy, and secure delivery.
Responsibilities:
- Guide, mentor, and grow software engineering and QA teams through 1:1s, feedback, and performance evaluations
- Foster a psychologically safe, collaborative, and empowering team culture
- Lead hiring initiatives for software engineering and QA roles
- Define scalable QA strategies combining automated, manual, and regression testing
- Track, analyze, and report quality metrics and QA validation throughput
- Optimize testing pipelines, bug triage workflows, and validation criteria
- Ensure releases and testing protocols meet quality, data privacy, and HIPAA compliance requirements
- Design and refine SDLC processes and agile delivery systems
- Allocate engineering and QA capacity against organizational priorities
- Establish project tracking, milestones, and delivery dashboards
- Collaborate with Product, Clinical Operations, and Support teams
- Communicate technical concepts and release readiness to non-technical stakeholders
- Evaluate modern test automation frameworks, engineering methodologies, and AI tools
- Write code, implement features, and resolve complex bugs alongside direct reports
- Facilitate technical design discussions and RFC reviews
- Conduct code reviews, promote unit/integration/end-to-end testing, and troubleshoot production issues
Requirements:
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2+ years in an engineering management, tech lead, or player-coach capacity
- Demonstrated experience managing or overseeing Quality Assurance (QA) functions, including test strategy definition, QA workflow design, and automated testing integration
- Active, hands-on coding proficiency in Node.js, Python, PostgreSQL, React, and serverless architectures such as AWS Lambda
- Proven ability to facilitate technical and architectural discussions while maintaining system reliability and scalability
- Thoughtful approach to modern developer tooling and AI, aligned with team consensus, engineering ethics, and organizational guidelines
- Proven track record managing quality metrics and validation throughput
- Experience balancing direct technical contributions with people management and process ownership
- Fluency in modern quality assurance and operational practices, including test automation frameworks, CI/CD test suites, and observability/monitoring tools
- Clear, empathetic communication skills bridging technical and non-technical domains across clinical and operational stakeholders
- Strong empathy for and understanding of the transgender community, including barriers in gender-affirming healthcare
- Only legally authorized to work in the USA; residency in the USA is required
- Nice to have: experience in telehealth, digital health, or HealthTech; familiarity with HIPAA and PHI safeguarding
- Nice to have: experience with Playwright, Cypress, or Jest
- Nice to have: startup or scale-up experience
- Nice to have: hands-on Infrastructure as Code experience, such as Terraform
