Job Description
Senior DevOps Engineer building Avalara's secure AI workflow platform, including n8n, for tax compliance automation. Owning cloud infrastructure, governance, observability, reliability, and AI-enhanced operations at enterprise scale.
Responsibilities:
- Own the end-to-end lifecycle of Avalara's AI workflow infrastructure, including n8n and related tools
- Design, set up, deploy, and operate infrastructure and platform components including environments, CI/CD, containers, runtime clusters, storage, secrets, networking, and integrations
- Build a secure, enterprise-grade AI workflow platform across dev, test, and production environments
- Embed security, privacy, compliance, hardened baselines, secret management, network and IAM boundaries, and CI/CD safeguards
- Define and drive SLOs, metrics, logging, alerting, incident reduction, and MTTR improvements
- Create reusable templates, reference pipelines, IaC modules, and guardrails for standardized AI workflows
- Align AI workflow infrastructure with Avalara's Software Maturity Model and engineering governance
- Mentor engineers and citizen developers and codify DevOps, automation, and AI best practices
- Use AI for incident triage, anomaly detection, capacity forecasting, change-risk assessment, IaC, CI/CD, security policies, runbooks, and orchestration patterns
- Partner with architecture, security, platform, integration, operations, and business teams
- Deliver measurable improvements in reliability, deployment success, cycle time, automation coverage, scalability, and operational excellence
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
- 5–8+ years in DevOps, SRE, or platform engineering for SaaS or large-scale distributed systems
- Direct ownership of production environments
- Strong experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP, including VPC design, security groups, load balancers, and managed Kubernetes or equivalent orchestration
- Deep hands-on Infrastructure as Code experience with Terraform or equivalent
- Proven ownership of CI/CD pipelines such as GitLab CI/CD, including automated testing, security scanning, and artifact management
- Solid understanding of Linux and/or Windows
- Knowledge of DNS, TLS, routing, firewalls, and secure secret management
- Hands-on experience with logging and monitoring stacks such as Sumo Logic, Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalents
- Experience defining meaningful SLOs and production alerts
- Experience running or supporting multi-tenant or shared platforms used by multiple teams
- Evidence of using AI tools in day-to-day engineering or operations with measurable impact
- Experience mentoring engineers and supporting citizen developers new to agentic AI and automation concepts
- Clear communication with engineering, security, operations, and business stakeholders
