Job Description
Interim Head of Finance owning regulated carrier accounting, reserves, controls and reporting for Zego’s AI-led insurance business. Partnering with actuarial teams and the GFSC in Gibraltar or nearby Spain.
Responsibilities:
- Own the general ledger and insurance balance sheet in NetSuite, accounting for premiums, claims, commissions, reinsurance recoveries and profit-share arrangements
- Lead month-end and year-end close and produce insurance-carrier management accounts
- Prepare annual statutory accounts under UK GAAP (FRS 102) and applicable Gibraltar Companies Act requirements
- Support regulatory returns to the GFSC
- Reconcile balance sheet, bank, fiduciary, and intercompany accounts monthly, including reconciliation to actuarial reserves
- Validate and integrate technical reserve calculations such as IBNR, UPR and URR into the ledgers
- Support Solvency II reporting, including QRTs, SFCR and ORSA inputs
- Monitor capital adequacy and appropriate capital buffers
- Partner with actuarial, underwriting and pricing teams to analyse loss ratios, combined ratios and product-line profitability
- Design, implement and enforce financial controls and SOPs
- Act as primary contact for external auditors and the GFSC and manage the annual audit through sign-off
- Ensure timely filing of corporate taxes and regulatory financial submissions
- Manage, mentor and develop one finance team member
- Oversee daily cash flow and liquidity and produce rolling cash flow forecasts
- Support investment income accounting
- Own the ZIL finance system stack and maintain integration with policy administration and actuarial data
Requirements:
- Fully qualified accountant: ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent
- Proven track record in insurance carrier balance-sheet accounting; broker or agency-only experience is insufficient
- Demonstrated experience working closely with actuaries
- Strong conceptual grasp of reserving, pricing and capital modelling
- Familiarity with Solvency II reporting, including QRT, SFCR and ORSA
- Experience preparing statutory accounts
- Gibraltar or comparable small-jurisdiction regulatory experience is an advantage
- Demonstrable experience building, testing and enforcing internal financial controls
- Experience managing and developing direct reports in a lean environment
- Experience managing external audits end to end
- Resilience in a fast-paced, evolving environment while maintaining quality and accuracy
- Willingness and ability to hold a GFSC-approved regulated-person position for ZIL
- AI-first mindset; willingness to use AI daily, experiment quickly and take ownership of learning
- Big 4 audit experience with an insurance client portfolio is a bonus
- Hands-on NetSuite experience in an insurance or MGA setting is a bonus
