Job Description
Materials and engineering expert creating scorable tasks for Mercor’s AI-model training projects. Testing model reasoning through domain-authentic prompts, data rooms, and grading criteria.
Responsibilities:
- Author domain-authentic materials science, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering tasks based on prior work
- Build data rooms and objective grading criteria
- Run tasks against AI models and analyze successes and failures
- Iterate tasks until they effectively discriminate model performance
- Collaborate with project leads and other domain experts to define quality standards
- Participate in daily onboarding sessions and office hours
- Create prompts, data rooms, and grading methods to test AI model reasoning
Requirements:
- Senior expertise in materials science, including metals, ceramics, composites, characterization, or additive manufacturing; or electrical engineering (analog, RF, power); or mechanical engineering (design, CFD and fluids, heat transfer, pressure vessels, NDE, CAE)
- Comfortable navigating ambiguity
- Able to explain why a wrong answer is wrong
- Must work as an independent contractor
- Must not require H1-B or STEM OPT support
- Work must not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client, or institution
