Job Description
Principal Consultant providing chemical engineering expertise for ICF’s renewable fuel, hydrogen, and natural gas projects. Leading feasibility, design review, cost analysis, and project advisory work.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary subject matter expert in biochemical processes
- Evaluate designs of biofuel, renewable chemical, and hydrogen production systems
- Lead scoping and feasibility studies
- Author design bases, create process simulations, develop equipment lists and layout drawings, and deliver FEL-1 and FEL-2 package services
- Review and refine capital and operating cost assessments
- Create Class V cost estimates using vendor quotes, public resources, and spreadsheet calculations
- Draft technology sections for due diligence reports used in project financing
- Travel to project sites to oversee pilot or demonstration facilities
- Monitor construction progress and conduct performance tests for emerging commercial facilities
- Provide technical leadership for alcohol-to-jet, renewable diesel, ethanol, and other renewable fuel technologies
- Assess process risks and costs for oligomerization, hydrotreating, fermentation, and other technology pathways
- Lead engineering assessments of hydrogen production through SMR, thermal processes, and electrolysis
- Provide technical leadership for renewable natural gas technologies, including landfill gas gathering systems, anaerobic digesters, and gas cleanup systems
- Manage independent engineering or owner's advisory projects
- Collaborate with clients, organize ICF teams, and oversee project finances and reporting
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in chemical/mechanical engineering or a related field with a focus on renewable and conventional fuels
- 20+ years of experience in a technical role, including a primary or lead role in the design and construction of biofuel/biochemical projects
- US Citizenship
- Experience with process design, product standards, equipment selection, and process energy efficiency methods
- Experience with the interplay between process performance, operating costs, and project financial viability
- Preferred: 25+ years of experience in a technical role
- Preferred: Advanced degree in engineering
- Preferred: Professional Engineering license
- Preferred: Prior experience at a refinery and petrochemical facility
- Preferred: Prior experience at an EPC contractor or detailed engineering firm
- Preferred: Prior experience working on FEL-1, FEL-2, and FEL-3 projects
- Preferred: Experience with remote work environments or organizations
- Preferred: Background in technical due diligence for project financing
- Preferred: Familiarity with Carbon Intensity calculations and methodologies, including Cal-GREET, ANL-GREET, Corsia, and Open LCA
- Preferred: Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment systems
- Preferred: Familiarity with thermochemical systems such as pyrolysis, hydrotreating, and gasification
- Preferred: Strong communication skills to convey technical concepts effectively to diverse audiences
- Preferred: Eagerness to learn about emerging technologies, validate conceptual designs, and assess feasibility
