Job Description

Senior Engineering Manager leading AWS infrastructure, DevOps, and data engineering for a virtual reading tutoring company. Owning platform strategy, team growth, and SOC2 compliance.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead, manage, and grow the DevOps and Data Engineering teams
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and career development for six engineers
  • Develop technical leads within each team
  • Set and drive a unified platform roadmap with the Director of Engineering and VP of Data
  • Balance infrastructure investment, data platform direction, technical debt, and delivery needs
  • Ensure reliable, scalable, and secure AWS cloud infrastructure
  • Maintain smooth and efficient deployment pipelines for the engineering organization
  • Ensure the data platform serves product engineering and analytics/data science teams
  • Establish clear intake, prioritization, and data quality standards
  • Oversee monitoring, alerting, on-call, and incident response
  • Own the annual SOC2 audit and penetration test cycles
  • Coordinate auditors, vendors, and internal teams
  • Track remediation
  • Collaborate with development teams to integrate DevOps and data best practices into the software development lifecycle
  • Write and collaborate on technical specifications
  • Review designs and guide architectural decisions
  • Model effective use of GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude, and similar AI tools
  • Coach teams on AI-assisted development practices
  • Track and share team-level AI adoption progress, wins, and learnings

Requirements:

  • 8+ years in software, infrastructure, or data engineering
  • 2+ years directly managing engineers
  • Deep, hands-on expertise in cloud infrastructure/DevOps or modern data engineering
  • Working fluency in the other domain
  • Experience running a team serving multiple internal customers
  • Familiarity with security and compliance standards such as SOC2
  • Experience owning a compliance program end-to-end
  • Experience developing senior engineers into technical leads
  • Experience building team resilience through documentation, on-call health, and single-point-of-failure reduction
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strategic thinking and ability to balance short-term objectives with long-term goals
  • Ability to be self-managing and flexible in a remote environment
  • Demonstrated regular use of AI coding assistants
  • Ability to validate AI outputs and identify when suggestions should be modified or rejected
  • Understanding of when AI tools add value versus traditional approaches
  • Willingness to learn, adapt to, and coach others on AI development tools and practices
