Job Description
Senior Backend Engineer building Kotlin and Python identity systems for Affirm’s global buy-now-pay-later platform. Owning distributed systems, reliability, technical direction and international expansion.
Responsibilities:
- Own and deliver quarterly goals for the team
- Lead engineers through ambiguous, open-ended problems and support them throughout delivery
- Collaborate with product management, design and analytics throughout the product development lifecycle
- Participate in ideation and articulate technical constraints
- Partner on decisions considering risks and trade-offs
- Identify and lead resolution of project, process, technology and business issues
- Create and monitor metrics supporting operations and availability
- Escalate issues and support keep-the-lights-on and on-call efforts
- Set and improve code review and design standards
- Advocate for engineering standards through writing and tech talks
- Develop talent through feedback, guidance and leading by example
- Write Kotlin and Python code, ship features, investigate production issues and maintain system reliability
- Reduce toil, create playbooks, mentor engineers, support new hires and interns, and contribute to hiring
Requirements:
- 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale
- Experience using Python or Kotlin
- Track record developing highly available distributed systems
- Experience with AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes
- Experience defining technical plans for significant features or system components
- Elegant, simple and extensible system design skills
- High-quality coding practices
- Proficiency making significant changes in a large code base
- Tools and practices enabling safe codebase changes
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to collaborate with a global engineering team
