Job Description
Software Engineer building reliable PID automation and hardware interfaces for Culture Biosciences’ cloud-connected bioprocess development platform. Improving control-loop stability across physical bioreactor systems.
Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain automation systems for bioreactor and bioprocessing operations
- Tune and troubleshoot real-world control loops, diagnosing oscillation, lag, overshoot, and instability
- Improve automation reliability through monitoring, logging, fault detection, and recovery mechanisms
- Evolve the AsyncAPI hardware interface so higher-level automation and AI systems can safely interact with physical equipment
- Improve existing control-loop tuning and failure modes
- Develop and optimize new feedback control systems, including PID loops, for stability, performance, and robustness
- Build software interfaces for sensors, actuators, embedded controllers, and orchestration systems
- Partner with mechanical, electrical, process, and software engineers to translate requirements into reliable control implementations
- Learn about biotechnology and bioprocess development
Requirements:
- 4+ years of industry experience including 2+ years developing software
- Working knowledge of sensors, actuators, and data acquisition, including failure modes
- Strong understanding of classical control theory, especially PID control, feedback loops, stability, response tuning, and disturbance rejection
- Strong working relationship with scientists and ability to translate process requirements into control logic
- Technical rigor in testing assumptions, validating behavior against data, and understanding failure modes
- Strong systems thinking and ability to work across hardware and software boundaries
- Experience in robotics, manufacturing automation, biotech automation, or other complex electromechanical systems (preferred)
- Professional software engineering experience, including CI and automated testing (preferred)
- AWS, Docker, infrastructure as code, or connected edge devices (preferred)
- Exposure to regulated environments (GLP/GMP, ISO) (preferred)
- Familiarity with sampling, filtering, sensor noise, and actuator constraints (preferred)
