Job Description

Freelance Spanish to English Legal Translator for Global Language Strategies translating legal documents. Requires U.S. Citizenship and proficiency in legal terminology with significant experience in translation and transcription.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate translation, editing of documents, and/or transcription of audio files involving law enforcement and legal subject matter from English to Spanish or bidirectional.
  • Edit audio transcriptions that include slang and idioms.
  • Edit legal documents, such as affidavits, depositions, etc., while demonstrating a strong command of legal terminology in both English and the target language.
  • Excellent written communication skills in English and the target foreign language, with Advanced Proficiency (reading/speaking/listening, writing) level 3-plus in English and the foreign target language, as assessed by the International Language Roundtable (ILR) scale.
  • Translate, edit, and/or transcribe following the government client’s style guides and quality standards.
  • Use domain-specific terminology.
  • Review and certify other translators’ work quality, as needed.
  • Highly proficient in MS Office, with the ability to mirror source document format in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiar with the use of CAT tools, such as Trados Studio.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • At least 3 years of experience in legal documentation, translating, and/or editing between English and a foreign language.
  • At least 3 years of experience performing audio transcription with the ability to use software to enhance sound and equipment to aid in transcription.
  • Familiar with legal terminology in both English and the target foreign language(s).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Translators and editors must proficiently use CAT tools, such as Trados.
