Job Description

Underwriting Counsel evaluating title searches, insurance risks, premiums, and transaction requirements. Supporting Stewart, a global title and real estate services company, through informed underwriting decisions.

Responsibilities:

  • Review and evaluate title searches and insurance risk factors
  • Justify and communicate underwriting requirements to counsel for buyers, sellers, and lenders in real estate transactions
  • Evaluate risk and exposures to determine business acceptability
  • Determine premiums, terms, and conditions based on established rules, rates, and guidelines
  • Analyze relevant data, including financial conditions, participation percentage, industry type, employee-group characteristics, and past claim experience
  • Perform assignments and lead projects within the discipline
  • Apply business knowledge and best practices to organizational objectives
  • Solve moderately complex to complex problems and analyze possible solutions
  • Explain complex and sensitive information clearly
  • Provide guidance to less experienced team members
  • Perform other duties assigned by management

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field preferred
  • Typically requires 2+ years of related work experience
  • Working knowledge of business and best practices
  • Technical experience, judgment, and understanding of precedents
  • Ability to evaluate title searches, insurance risk factors, risks, and exposures
  • Ability to justify and communicate underwriting requirements
  • Ability to determine premiums, terms, and conditions using rules, rates, and guidelines
  • Ability to solve moderately complex to complex problems
  • Ability to explain complex and sensitive information straightforwardly
  • Ability to work with limited oversight
