Job Description
Accounting Manager leading remote accounting pods for Zenbooks, a Canadian firm serving small and mid-sized businesses. Owning client delivery, financial reporting, team development, pod KPIs, and revenue performance.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage a pod of accountants and senior accountants, providing coaching, technical guidance, and regular feedback
- Oversee monthly accounting activities including A/R, A/P, payroll entries, reconciliations, accruals, and adjustments
- Lead mid- to high-complexity client engagements as primary accounting advisor and point of contact
- Prepare and present advanced financial reports, KPI dashboards, and budgets with insights and recommendations
- Conduct 1:1s, performance check-ins, and semi-annual reviews
- Support staffing, workload balancing, and scheduling across the pod
- Provide escalation support for technical accounting issues, client challenges, and workflow blockers
- Oversee client deliverables and approve financial statements, reconciliations, working papers, and month-end packages
- Monitor client satisfaction and address concerns, scope issues, and workflow challenges
- Build strategic client relationships and provide proactive communication and guidance
- Own pod gross margin, budget-versus-actual hours, KPIs, revenue retention, upsells, and workflow consistency
- Collaborate with the Director of Operations on pricing, resourcing, and capacity planning
- Identify upsell and expansion opportunities and support revenue performance, renewals, and pricing changes
- Ensure adherence to Zenbooks best practices, SOPs, documentation standards, and internal controls
- Lead process improvement initiatives and support special projects, system improvements, and catch-up work
- Collaborate with Tax and Payroll teams and participate in internal meetings, reporting pod metrics and solving issues
Requirements:
- 1–2 years of experience managing a team
- 1–2 years of experience in a controllership role or handling controllership-level responsibilities
- 2–3 years of client-facing experience supporting monthly reporting
- Strong working knowledge of cloud accounting software, such as Xero and/or QBO
- Must pass a criminal background check and/or education/employment verification
- High-speed internet access required
- Availability during core business hours
- Access to Excel or Google Sheets is required for the case activity
- Some candidates may be asked to complete a QBO walkthrough
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Customer service orientation with excellent communication
