Job Description
Structural biology expert building rigorous benchmarks for Latch’s AI agents. Evaluating macromolecular structures, datasets, and scientific reasoning across experimental and computational methods.
Responsibilities:
- Define expert reasoning and write gold-standard answers for structural biology questions
- Design realistic scenarios across data collection, processing, map interpretation, model building, validation, assembly, state assignment, comparison, functional interpretation, interaction analysis, molecular dynamics, and metadynamics
- Curate datasets spanning X-ray, cryo-EM, atomic models, AlphaFold, molecular dynamics, NMR, SAXS, HDX-MS, cross-linking, and SHAPE/DMS modalities
- Build Python analysis pipelines using gemmi, Biopython/biotite, and numpy
- Partner with software engineers to create benchmark workflows
- Test agents for artifacts, over-interpretation, incorrect interfaces, register shifts, mirrored maps, misdocked domains, and misuse of B-factors or occupancies
- Adjudicate ambiguous structural cases and identify evidence needed to resolve them
- Evaluate representations and comparisons, including biological assemblies, asymmetric units, reference states, and domain superposition
- Interrogate agent reasoning and challenge scientifically unsound conclusions
- Identify agent errors and explain expert alternatives
- Score agent confidence and reward appropriate uncertainty
Requirements:
- PhD in structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry, or a related field
- Hands-on structural experience building and validating models
- Deep expertise in at least one area: X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, NMR/solution methods, or computational structural biology
- Working fluency across the other structural biology methods
- Ability to compute contacts, superpositions, symmetry mates, map values, and geometry from files without a GUI
- Coding experience for structural data
- Daily use of Claude, Cursor, or similar AI agents
- Judgment to identify scientifically unsound AI reasoning
- Ability to calibrate confidence and communicate uncertainty
- US citizenship, permanent residency, or OPT-holder status
- No STEM OPT extension or sponsorship support
Benefits:
- Guaranteed pay for weeks 1–4 while ramping
- Uncapped upside
- Full-time work on your own schedule
- Catered lunch and dinner daily for onsite employees
- Waterfront office in Mission Bay
- Monthly parking when available
