Job Description
Deputy Editor managing AI/intelligent systems peer review for Wiley, a science and learning publisher. Making editorial decisions, commissioning content, and mentoring editors across scholarly journals.
Responsibilities:
- Manage the end-to-end peer review process for scholarly journal content
- Screen submitted manuscripts for scientific quality, relevance, and journal-scope alignment
- Identify and escalate publication ethics or integrity concerns
- Make editorial decisions including accept, reject, revise, and transfer
- Select, invite, and manage peer reviewers
- Evaluate reviewer feedback and determine manuscript next steps
- Assess revised submissions and author rebuttals
- Recommend alternative journals for manuscript transfers
- Commission content such as review articles and special issues
- Build relationships with authors and researchers and track invited submissions
- Collaborate with Editors-in-Chief on journal aims, scope, and editorial strategy
- Recommend and support editorial board appointments
- Contribute to commissioning targets and KPIs
- Attend conferences, webinars, and scientific events and represent the journal and organization
- Build professional networks to enhance journal visibility and submissions
- Analyze peer-review metrics and identify improvement opportunities
- Lead or contribute to editorial workflow optimization projects
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams on process improvements
- Participate in editorial clusters and knowledge-sharing initiatives
- Train and mentor peers and junior editors
- Manage editorial responsibilities across multiple journals and Editors-in-Chief
- Handle complex or high-impact editorial cases independently
- Identify opportunities for new products, content areas, or journal development
- Share insights with relevant internal stakeholders
Requirements:
- PhD in AI/intelligent systems
- Proven experience in academic publishing, editorial roles, or manuscript handling
- Strong understanding of peer review processes and publication ethics
- Subject matter expertise in a specific research domain
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills
- Ability to manage multiple manuscripts and priorities simultaneously
- Effective stakeholder management and communication skills
- Experience commissioning content and engaging with author communities
- Data-driven mindset with ability to interpret performance metrics
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Collaborative mindset with mentoring capability
