Job Description
Engineering Manager owning architecture, delivery, and roadmap for Nexcess Commerce Solutions. Leading AI-assisted engineering for WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, and managed cloud applications.
Responsibilities:
- Own the architecture design, delivery, and roadmap for one engineering team
- Partner with Product to shape, scope, commit to, and deliver the roadmap
- Own engineering outcomes for Commerce Solutions' WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, and other application stacks
- Own automation, tooling, and images that keep applications current and safe to upgrade
- Build understanding of customers, architecture, dependencies, integrations, and operational risks
- Ensure long-term health and evolution of owned products
- Write specifications, review pull requests, and ship production changes
- Run and drive adoption of the AI harness, agentic tooling, specification-first workflows, automated pull-request review, and reusable skills
- Scope and estimate monthly work, identify unknowns, establish cut lines, and report status honestly
- Clear cross-team engineering dependencies before they block delivery
- Improve DORA performance by reducing review latency, build time, environment issues, handoffs, and approval loops
- Require tests with every change, coverage gating on changed code, and evidence in pull requests
- Own release go/no-go decisions based on evidence
- Hold one-to-ones, maintain growth plans, provide direct feedback, and grow engineers
- Own hiring end to end
- Operate a fair on-call rotation, close incident actions, remove toil, and eliminate single points of failure
- Take a turn on the team's on-call rotation
Requirements:
- 7+ years in software engineering, including at least one year leading engineers formally or informally
- Hands-on technical fluency in PHP, Vue, and React
- Experience with WordPress
- Experience with GitHub Automation
- Experience with unit and integration testing
- Currently hands-on; shipped code recently and able to review AI-generated code
- Real, hands-on AI-assisted engineering experience with quantifiable impact
- Evidence of making a team measurably faster using DORA numbers or an equivalent
- Experience delivering and modernizing software to committed dates
- Experience with collaborative scoping and data-driven forecasting
- Experience operating a production on-call rotation
- Experience owning hiring end to end and holding a hiring bar
- Experience leading engineers across time zones
- Experience in managed hosting, cloud, or another high-availability service business
