Job Description
GIS specialist supporting NMFS protected-species programs through environmental mapping, spatial analysis, and geospatial database management. Remote role with Ocean Associates government-contractor support.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with overall management and implementation of environmental GIS programs
- Support Federal staff with the design, creation, integrity, and archival of environmental GIS databases
- Integrate data from shapefiles, GPS, geophysical and analytic data, field measurements and notes, hard-copy maps, and tables
- Assist with GIS data transfer between contractors and federal agencies
- Design, create, and output hard- and soft-copy maps conveying protected species locations/density, anthropogenic threats, and oceanographic features
- Define data needs for geospatial projects and solve multifaceted geospatial and GIS issues
- Calculate and analyze cumulative environmental impacts
- Conduct 3D/spatial analysis and geospatial modeling
- Translate raw data into code, identify data interrelationships, apply geographic data layers, and reconcile coding errors
- Design, develop, and manage geospatial databases and convert digital and analog source data
- Develop and implement quality-control and quality-assurance guidelines for geospatial data projects
- Provide technical user support for geospatial data and software
- Assist with statewide standards and applications
- Coordinate data capture/analysis projects and geospatial applications
- Incorporate GIS resource data into planning documents and processes
- Integrate Enterprise GIS with long- and short-term planning and management activities
- Recommend changes to localized procedures and methods
- Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Limited travel to meetings or workshops may be required
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in GIS, Geography, Cartography, Earth Science, Computer Science, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Fisheries, or related field, and four (4) or more years of demonstrated experience in the GIS field
- A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for two (2) years of demonstrated experience
- Knowledge of GIS principles, terminology, and methods
- Advanced cartographic and spatial analysis skills
- Ability to work independently and with attention to detail
- Ability to work with geodatabases, relational databases, and geometric networks
- Ability to build web maps and applications
- Ability to analyze GIS requests and design appropriate products
- Ability to identify and obtain up-to-date datasets
- Ability to manage data holdings in an organized structure
- Knowledge of Google Suite of office products
- Ability to work effectively individually and collaboratively in a team/group setting
- Cover letter mandatory with resume
- Work authorization in the United States and successful federal government background check required
