Job Description
Remote Florida Staff Attorney providing civil legal advice, referrals, and pro se support through Community Legal Services’ helpline. Serving low-income and vulnerable clients across the organization’s 12-county service area.
Responsibilities:
- Provide advice, brief services, and referrals in various areas of civil law
- Demonstrate commitment to understanding and addressing issues affecting low-income and vulnerable populations
- Determine client eligibility for legal services according to firm policies and procedures
- Empower and counsel pro se litigants through civil legal issues
- Provide local community resources for a holistic approach
- Conduct initial client consultations
- Identify, assess, and analyze civil legal issues
- Conduct legal research
- Prepare pro se pleadings and letters
- Use multiple computer platforms and technology for client interactions, case management, and phone systems
- Attend meetings and other functions within or outside CLS’s 12-county service area
- Perform other duties as assigned to balance workload and cover absences
Requirements:
- Must be admitted in good standing to practice law in Florida
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
- No prior experience in any particular area of law required
- Experience in civil litigation or working with low-income and/or vulnerable clients and communities on civil legal matters preferred
- Experience working in a rapid-paced environment with a high capacity to prioritize and manage simultaneous tasks
- Highly approachable presentation
- Organizational skills
- Ability to effectively and consistently engage and collaborate with a diverse constituency
- Excellent legal and community partnership skills
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office 365
- Valid Florida automobile license
- Use of own automobile
- Proof of insurance necessary
- Ability to work scheduled and flexible hours, including some evenings/weekends, based on business needs
- Ability to learn and utilize multiple computer platforms and technology for client interactions, case management, and phone systems
- Ability to maintain professional and legal knowledge through continuing education
