Job Description

Innovation communications fellow documenting mDoc's AI-enabled healthcare and digital health work. Translating research, clinical and implementation insights into compelling stories, newsletters and technical publications.

Responsibilities:

  • Work alongside mDoc's clinical, AI, product, research and implementation teams to uncover and communicate what mDoc is building, testing and learning
  • Help build an innovation newsroom inside mDoc
  • Identify important innovations, insights, results and lessons with ML, clinical, product, research and implementation teams
  • Attend selected product and implementation discussions
  • Interview team members, partners and, where appropriate, people using mDoc's services
  • Research and draft innovation and thought-leadership articles, technical and evidence-based blogs, case studies, executive and founder thought leadership, conference abstracts and submissions, policy and technical briefs, video and documentary scripts, research manuscripts and papers, and grant and partner-facing innovation narratives
  • Translate complex technical, clinical and implementation work into writing that is rigorous, understandable and compelling
  • Help create a flagship monthly innovation newsletter about what mDoc is building, testing, learning and discovering
  • Provide funders, governments, researchers, technologists, healthcare leaders and partners with a transparent view into building and deploying new healthcare models in real-world settings
  • Systematically document mDoc's innovation and institutional knowledge in an Innovation Story Bank
  • Capture for major innovations: the problem, insight, solution, novelty, deployment, evidence/results, failures, changes, lessons and significance
  • Work with research and data teams to turn findings into understandable stories without compromising scientific rigor
  • Help explain what findings indicate about how healthcare could work differently

Requirements:

  • Minimum: a Bachelor's degree (Second Class Upper or equivalent) in public health, global health, medicine, science, technology, journalism, communications, public policy, international development, behavioral science, health informatics or another relevant discipline
  • 0–2 years of relevant experience
  • Recent graduates who completed studies within the last 2–3 years are strongly encouraged to apply
  • A portfolio or writing samples demonstrating strong writing, such as published articles, blogs, research papers, reports or academic writing
  • Exceptional writing across articles, scripts and scientific abstracts
  • Intellectual curiosity and ability to ask why, how, what happened next and what was learned
  • Analytical ability to read research, interrogate data and distinguish evidence from assertion
  • Storytelling ability to find stories in technical reports, product meetings or conversations with frontline health workers
  • Genuine interest in AI and technology, including their limitations, safety and real-world implementation
  • Accuracy and rigor in fact-checking, interrogating claims and avoiding exaggeration of evidence
  • Comfort with ambiguity and innovation that may involve things that did not work
  • Ability to interview and engage experts, senior leaders and frontline teams
  • Preferred: a completed Master's degree in a relevant field
  • Preferred: prior exposure to research, journalism, communications, health or technology-related work, including academic, volunteer, internship or NYSC placements
  • Preferred: experience writing for scientific, technical or policy audiences, including abstracts, manuscripts or briefs
  • Desirable: familiarity with digital health, health systems or African health contexts
  • Desirable: basic video or documentary scripting skills
  • Desirable: experience producing newsletters or editorial content
  • Desirable: ability to work with data and interpret research findings with support from the research team
