Job Description

Law Clerk Intern supporting animal protection litigation, legislation, and legal research at Humane World for Animals. Contributing to advocacy, compliance, and risk management projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with attorneys in the Animal Protection Law section
  • Research, prepare, and prosecute animal protection lawsuits in state and federal court
  • Prepare rulemaking petitions and comments before administrative agencies
  • Prepare and review federal, state, and local legislation
  • Provide research and drafting support for Farm Animals, Companion Animals, Wildlife & Animal Research, and Legislative Drafting & Review legal groups
  • Attend weekly departmental reporting and planning meetings and other relevant meetings
  • Support legal research, contract review, policy and compliance projects, litigation, risk management matters, and other legal operations initiatives

Requirements:

  • Must be a 2L or 3L law student working toward a Juris Doctor degree
  • Must be able to learn and follow guidelines and policies of Humane World for Animals and APL, and follow directions given by staff
  • Must submit required paperwork and pass a background check before being assigned
  • Strong interest in animal protection issues, litigation, and legal research
  • Superior oral communication skills and exceptional legal research, writing, and critical thinking skills
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Able to take initiative and manage multiple projects and priorities while demonstrating a strong work ethic
  • Demonstrate flexibility and eagerness to learn and take initiative on a variety of projects
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel)
  • Proficiency in Westlaw and Lexis/Nexis legal research databases
  • Strong familiarity with the Internet and online research tools
  • Able to use discretion and maintain confidentiality
  • Able to maintain professionalism in attitude and appearance
  • Possess problem-solving capability and ability to think creatively in a solution-oriented way
  • Able to work well independently and use good judgment
  • Coursework or other experience in animal protection, administrative, or environmental law preferred
  • Must meet one of the following criteria: currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student of an accredited college or university; high school or accredited college or university graduate who graduated within the last two years; or service member with an honorable discharge within two years of leaving the military
  • Must commit to at least 10 weeks and work a minimum of 35 hours per week
