Job Description
Mathematical Physicist creating and validating research-level physics problems for CritPt. Contributing specialist expertise to Mercor’s frontier AI training projects.
Responsibilities:
- Work on research-level physics problems in the candidate’s own subfield
- Create, solve, review, or audit benchmark problems depending on publication record and matched area
- Produce complete written reasoning that another specialist can independently follow and verify
- Apply specialized methods in special function analysis, integrability, combinatorics, or geometric analysis
- Provide up to five selected areas of fit, supported by the candidate’s own papers, author position, and demonstrated methods
- Participate in onboarding or a short live alignment call to agree on the area and assignment
- Complete a brief 30–45 minute assessment if needed
- Contribute to CritPt, a public benchmark testing frontier AI models’ genuine physics research reasoning
- Support Mercor’s projects training and enhancing AI systems
Requirements:
- PhD in mathematical physics, theoretical physics, or mathematics (hard requirement)
- Postdoctoral researchers, research scientists, and junior faculty are strongest fits
- Senior PhD students with a strong first-author record may apply
- Published work on one of the specified phenomena, not merely adjacent areas
- Verifiable publication record with three to five representative papers, including arXiv IDs or DOIs; first author strongly preferred
- Demonstrated expertise in at least one specified area: special functions, integrable systems, permutation combinatorics for random tensor network entanglement, or conformal geometry
- Working proficiency with LaTeX, Python, SymPy, and Jupyter
- Familiarity with an agentic coding extension in VS Code is useful but not required
- English at B2 level or above, including written reasoning
- Availability for 10 hours per week across an 8 to 10 week window, starting immediately
- Must work as an independent contractor
- H1-B and STEM OPT candidates are not supported
Benefits:
- Remote and asynchronous work with no fixed hours
- Fully remote role completed on your own schedule
- Weekly payments via Stripe or Wise
- Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded early depending on needs and performance
- Reasonable accommodations upon request
- Competitive pay
- Collaboration with leading researchers
- Up to $440 referral payment for each successful referral, subject to limits
