Job Description

Mental health and addictions advisor supporting service users through New Zealand’s National Telehealth Service. Providing trauma-informed assessment, emotional support, referrals, and risk escalation.

Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a collaborative 24/7 shift team supporting essential National Telehealth Service programs
  • Provide mental health and addictions support, including assessment, interventions, support planning, referrals, risk identification, and escalation
  • Identify strengths, protective factors, and practical next steps with service users
  • Support individuals to access urgent services when needed
  • Deliver culturally responsive, trauma-informed support aligned with Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Communicate with service users via phone, SMS, email, and online chat platforms
  • Accurately document information using organisational IT systems
  • Contribute to continuous quality improvement and uphold ethical and professional standards

Requirements:

  • Minimum Level 4 Health and Wellbeing qualification (Mental Health and Addiction strand or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated experience working with people experiencing mental distress and addiction challenges
  • Experience providing assessment, brief emotional support, and risk identification
  • Experience supporting people to access urgent services when required
  • Understanding of trauma informed, wellbeing oriented, and values-based practice
  • Strong listening and communication skills with the ability to build rapport quickly in virtual environments
  • Sound assessment capability and decision making
  • Confidence using digital systems and communication platforms
  • Ability to work within established protocols, documentation standards, and clinical governance frameworks
  • Cultural responsiveness and commitment to equity
  • Professional resilience, accountability, and reflective practice
  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts, including overnights, early mornings, and weekends
  • Availability to work 0.6–1 FTE, with shifts between 10:30pm–11:00am
