Job Description
Polar engineering SME supporting Katmai’s government research on snow and ice runways. Developing runway guidance, specifications, and field measurement evaluations for polar operations.
Responsibilities:
- Accomplish snow and ice engineering, polar logistics, and data collection
- Provide technical support to the Government in conducting research and development projects for the Engineering Resources Branch (ERB)
- Provide technical input and support to ERB in developing design, performance, and evaluation specifications for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicles for polar snow and ice runways
- Develop comprehensive guidance and decision-support documents for U.S. Antarctic Program contract personnel operating and maintaining snow and ice runways and a long-duration balloon launch pad
- Develop and/or update UFC documents applicable to snow and ice runways and snow skiways
- Evaluate in-situ runway strength measurement tools for snow and white ice runways and their use in establishing operating limits for various aircraft types
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Work remotely, in laboratory settings, and at designated field locations, including cold and remote environments such as Antarctica, Greenland, and Alaska
Requirements:
- Relevant experience in snow and ice engineering, polar logistics, or related technical research
- Experience with data collection, data analysis, laboratory or field work, and technical report preparation
- Ability to apply technical judgment and resolve laboratory or field instrumentation and equipment issues
- Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks
- Ability to work independently and coordinate with researchers and technical personnel
- Experience with polar or cold-region research and field operations
- Experience developing technical guidance, specifications, or UFC documents
- Part-time availability; may be required to work additional hours as needed
- Expected travel time is less than 40%
- Must have or be able to attain a valid state driver’s license and be insurable on the company’s automobile insurance policy
- Expected driving time is less than 40%
