Job Description
Sr. Bioinformatics Scientist advancing Labcorp’s genomic diagnostics and laboratory healthcare solutions. Designing pipelines, software systems, and validated bioinformatics methods for complex clinical data.
Responsibilities:
- Lead complex technical projects
- Drive innovation in methods and tools through networking with key contacts
- Translate business needs into technical requirements for strategic planning
- Build cross-functional relationships to deliver business targets
- Advise others on complex bioinformatics and engineering matters
- Design and implement advanced bioinformatics solutions involving genomics and genetics
- Collaborate with molecular biology teams on assay development, experimental design, and analysis
- Support regulatory compliance through analysis and technical writing for verification, validation, and documentation
- Develop and optimize analysis pipelines using bioinformatics algorithms
- Guide result interpretation and reporting standards
- Establish quality control metrics and procedures for data integrity
- Improve accuracy, cost of goods sold (COGS), and turnaround time (TAT)
- Lead verification and validation efforts
- Interface with clinical and commercial stakeholders using bioinformatic data
- Evaluate genomic data for complex variant interpretation and identify system limitations
- Architect and implement complex software systems
- Design maintainable, debuggable, and observable systems and APIs
- Establish development standards and provide design feedback
- Improve system reliability and performance using appropriate metrics
- Lead technical design reviews
- Implement robust testing frameworks with team leads
- Guide technical architecture decisions for adjacent software systems
- Establish monitoring systems supporting debuggability and observability
- Drive engineering best-practice adoption across teams
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree with 10 or more years of experience in bioinformatics, molecular biology, computational biology or engineering, OR Master's degree with 6 years of experience in these fields, OR PhD with 4 or more years of experience in these fields
- 2 or more years of experience leading technical projects
- 2 or more years of experience in system architecture and design
- Experience with BWA, GATK, Deep variance, Dragen, Nextflow, Python, SKLearn, SciPy, PyTORCH, CI/CID, or GitHub Actions
- Understanding of regulatory requirements in bioinformatics, including compliance and documentation
- Understanding of bioinformatics algorithms and statistical and probabilistic techniques
- Understanding of molecular biology underlying one or more products
- Strong background in selecting datasets without assumptions and biases
- Project leadership abilities for complex issues
- Strategic thinking in selecting, evaluating, and adapting complex techniques
- Stakeholder management expertise across scientific and engineering boundaries
- Advanced communication skills for persuading diverse stakeholders
