Job Description
Senior Bioinformatics Scientist advancing genomic analysis and software systems at Labcorp, a global healthcare laboratory-services company. Leading pipelines, assay validation, regulatory compliance, and engineering architecture.
Responsibilities:
- Lead complex technical projects requiring evaluation of identifiable factors
- Drive innovation in methods and tools through networking with key contacts
- Translate business needs into technical requirements for strategic planning
- Build cross-functional relationships to deliver tactical business targets
- Advise others on complex matters related to bioinformatics and engineering
- Design and implement advanced bioinformatics solutions involving genomics and genetics
- Collaborate with molecular biology teams on assay development, including experimental design and analysis
- Support regulatory compliance through analysis and technical writing for verification, validation, and documentation
- Develop and optimize complex analysis pipelines based on bioinformatics algorithms
- Guide result interpretation and reporting standards considering medical and commercial requirements
- Establish quality control metrics and procedures to ensure data integrity
- Improve accuracy, COGS, and turnaround time (TAT)
- Lead verification and validation efforts following compliance processes
- Interface with clinical and commercial stakeholders using bioinformatic data
- Evaluate genomic data to deliver confident results for complex variants and identify system limitations
- Architect and implement complex software systems
- Design maintainable, debuggable, and observable systems and APIs
- Establish development standards through quality feedback on designs
- Improve system reliability and performance through appropriate metrics
- Lead technical design reviews for right-sized components
- Implement robust testing frameworks with team leads
- Guide technical architecture decisions for adjacent software systems
- Establish monitoring systems supporting debuggability and observability
- Drive adoption of engineering best practices within and across teams
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree with 10 or more years of experience in bioinformatics, molecular biology, computational biology or engineering, OR Master’s degree with 6 years of experience in these fields, OR PhD with 4 or more years of experience in these fields
- Understanding of regulatory requirements in bioinformatics, including regulatory compliance and documentation requirements
- Track record of identifying principled, robust, high-quality solutions to open-ended problems
- Understanding of bioinformatics algorithms and underlying statistical and probabilistic techniques
- Understanding of molecular biology underlying one or more products
- Strong background in selecting appropriate datasets void of assumptions and biases
- Project leadership abilities for complex issues requiring evaluation of variable factors
- Excellence in determining methods and processes on new assignments
- Strategic thinking in selecting methods, evaluating, and adapting complex techniques
- Stakeholder management expertise across scientific and engineering boundaries
- Advanced communication skills for persuading diverse stakeholders while delivering wider firm business messages
- Preferred: 2 or more years of experience leading technical projects
- Preferred: 2 or more years of experience in system architecture and design using BWA, GATK, Deep variance, Dragen, Nextflow, Python, SKLearn, SciPy, PyTORCH, CI/CID, or GitHub Actions
