Job Description
Staff Product Designer owning HubSpot’s Trellis design system, token architecture, and visual language. Advancing multi-theme, multi-platform design foundations for AI-powered customer software.
Responsibilities:
- Design and steward the three-tier token graph—global, semantic, and component-specific—for multi-theme, multi-platform, and multi-density requirements
- Make and defend architectural token decisions on naming conventions, tier boundaries, semantic abstraction levels, and flexibility versus constraint
- Manage token migrations through safe, phased rollout processes and governance
- Own Trellis’s visual language across color, typography, spacing, iconography, and motion
- Serve as the final eye on visual quality and hold the aesthetic quality bar
- Develop and communicate design principles and tenets
- Make the Trellis token layer machine-readable for AI coding tools, MCP integrations, and generative UI systems
- Partner with product teams across HubSpot as the token and visual language authority
- Collaborate with engineers on implementation fidelity and design intent
- Contribute to Trellis governance, contribution reviews, quality standards, and policies preventing token drift
Requirements:
- Prior hands-on ownership of a multi-tier token architecture at enterprise scale
- Experience designing and shipping a token system for a multi-product or multi-platform environment
- Track record of making consequential token architecture decisions, including naming, tier structure, semantic abstraction, and breaking change management
- Full command of visual design as a systems discipline, including color, typography, spacing, iconography, and motion
- Experience evolving a mature design language
- Portfolio demonstrating the aesthetic output of token and systems work
- Ability to form and deploy design tenets
- Working knowledge of or demonstrated interest in machine-readable design systems, including W3C DTCG token format and AI tool ingestion
- Familiarity with Tokens Studio, Style Dictionary, Figma Variables API, and emerging MCP/AI integrations
- Staff-level autonomy
- Ability to partner with engineering on implementation fidelity and technical constraints
- Ability to communicate token architecture decisions to non-specialist stakeholders
- Experience holding the visual quality standard for a system used by many designers
- Expert-level design craft and ability to lead multiple projects at a time
- Compelling presentation skills and a clear, informed point of view
- Strong cross-functional relationships and understanding of strategy and business goals
