Job Description
Controller responsible for managing day-to-day accounting and financial reporting for a national nonprofit organization. Leading compliance and audit processes while supporting strategic financial decisions.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, grants accounting, and fixed assets.
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Lead the monthly close process and ensure adherence to reporting deadlines.
- Analyze financial results and variances; provide insights and recommendations to the CFO.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including IRS and nonprofit reporting requirements.
- Manage the annual audit process, serving as the primary liaison with external auditors.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.
- Support preparation of Form 990 and other required filings in coordination with the CFO and external advisors.
- Support the CFO in the annual budgeting and forecasting process.
- Monitor budgets and grant expenditures to ensure compliance with donor and funding restrictions.
- Oversee accounting for grants, restricted funds, and donor-designated contributions.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop finance team.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field highly preferred.
- Minimum of 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory responsibility.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
- Experience managing audits and working with external auditors.
- Proficiency with accounting systems and Excel.
- CPA or CMA designation preferred.
- Prior experience in a national or multi-entity nonprofit organization.
- Experience with grants management and restricted fund accounting.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
- Proven leadership and people management capabilities.
