Job Description
Electrical Engineer improving Georgia-Pacific paper-finishing controls, automation, and equipment reliability. Supporting PLC systems, startups, troubleshooting, and standards across U.S. manufacturing facilities.
Responsibilities:
- Provide hands-on controls troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for reel, winder, roll handling, and related paper finishing systems
- Read, troubleshoot, modify, and validate PLC/HMI control strategies, including sequencing, permissives, interlocks, speed coordination, drives, motion control, fault handling, and machine diagnostics
- Troubleshoot and improve controls integration between finishing systems and upstream or downstream equipment
- Support startup, stabilization, and post-startup improvement of new or upgraded finishing systems
- Work with OEMs, project teams, and technical resources to identify recurring controls issues and develop improvements for future installations
- Maintain controls documentation, program backups, functional descriptions, troubleshooting guides, and related support information
- Develop and share repeatable controls practices, standards, and technical knowledge across Georgia-Pacific facilities
- Collaborate with site Operations, Process Control, E&I, maintenance, and other technical teams
- Travel regularly to manufacturing facilities, up to 50%, for outages, startups, troubleshooting, and optimization
Requirements:
- Associate’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related technical field; equivalent practical experience will also be considered
- Five (5) or more years of hands-on experience supporting industrial control systems in a manufacturing environment
- Experience troubleshooting, configuring, and modifying Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley PLC and HMI systems
- Experience troubleshooting integrated machine control systems involving PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, field devices, and industrial networks
- Experience implementing and validating control system changes on operating manufacturing equipment with operations and maintenance teams
- Working knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems and ability to interpret basic pneumatic and hydraulic schematics
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, control documentation, functional descriptions, and technical drawings
- Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to determine root cause of complex equipment and controls problems
- Strong communication skills and ability to work across operations, maintenance, engineering, OEM, and technical teams
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 50% to manufacturing facilities throughout the U.S.
- Legal authorization to work permanently in the U.S. for any employer without requiring visa sponsorship
- Experience supporting paper machine dry-end operations, including reels, winders, roll handling systems, and related material-handling equipment
- Understanding of machine control behavior, including sequencing, permissives, interlocks, speed coordination, stop/start logic, fault handling, and machine recovery
- Experience with servo systems, coordinated motion control, and advanced drive-based machine applications
- Experience with PID control, closed-loop control strategies, and tuning in industrial machine applications
- Experience with Siemens PLC and HMI platforms
- Experience configuring and troubleshooting machine safety systems and functional safety concepts
- Experience developing first-out diagnostics, alarming strategies, permissive/interlock visibility, and troubleshooting tools
- Experience supporting startup, commissioning, stabilization, and long-term sustainment of manufacturing equipment
- Experience developing and maintaining controls standards, functional descriptions, program backups, troubleshooting documentation, and technical information
- Experience mentoring engineers or technicians through controls troubleshooting, programming, commissioning, or equipment support
