Job Description
Engineering Manager leading Go-based IAM infrastructure for Bestow’s life insurance technology platform. Scaling multi-tenant authentication, authorization, and enterprise onboarding.
Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of Software Engineers building the identity and access management foundation for Bestow’s digital life insurance enrollment experience
- Spend approximately 20% of time writing production code
- Lead the team, shape architecture, and partner with Product Managers, Designers, and enterprise partners
- Operate Kubernetes workloads in Google Cloud Platform
- Build IAM platform scalability so enterprise customers can onboard without engineering intervention while meeting security and compliance requirements
- Stay involved in system design, architecture decisions, pull request reviews, code quality, testing, documentation, automation, and quality gates
- Debug and troubleshoot with engineers and lead diagnostic work
- Identify technical debt, plan remediation, and advocate for dedicated time
- Evolve authorization for multi-tenant enterprise customers
- Separate authentication and authorization for independent scaling, caching, and policy enforcement
- Design token strategies and manage related vendor relationships
- Build automated user provisioning and de-provisioning
- Address biometric re-authentication, extended sessions, layered access policies, and regulatory audit requirements
- Participate in the IAM team’s weekly on-call rotation
- Own observability, monitoring, alerting, uptime, incident metrics, and incident response
- Recruit, interview, hire, onboard, coach, and develop engineers
- Conduct 1:1s, create development plans, provide stretch assignments, and address team conflict
- Set expectations, provide feedback, conduct performance reviews, and address underperformance
- Translate product requirements into technical plans, estimate capacity and timelines, and deliver against estimates
- Own the team roadmap and daily prioritization
- Track delivery metrics and report them in monthly operating reviews
- Set IAM’s technical direction and translate company strategy into team-level work through RFCs, PRD input, and tickets
- Communicate status, progress, and risk to stakeholders, senior leadership, and external partners
- Connect technical work to business outcomes and make cost-benefit trade-offs explicit
- Model AI coding tool usage, establish review/testing/attribution standards, and develop the team’s AI practices
- Create room for experimentation and learning from failed experiments
Requirements:
- 8+ years of professional software experience
- 1+ years directly managing a team of Software Engineers while staying hands-on in the code
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
- Professional experience with Go, or another statically typed backend language with a clear path to Go
- Production experience with cloud infrastructure and Kubernetes or a comparable container orchestration platform
- Experience with PostgreSQL or another relational database and ANSI SQL
- Experience designing modern distributed systems and APIs
- Experience with Docker for local development
- Experience with Protocol Buffers, OpenAPI, or Swagger
- Deep understanding of the full software development lifecycle, continuous integration, and release strategy
- Hands-on experience using agentic coding tools on a production codebase
- Ability to track key metrics and meet established Service Level Agreements
- Ability to break down ambiguous technical problems and identify risks early
- Ability to pick up and ship work in the team's codebases
- E-Verify employment eligibility confirmation for newly hired employees
- IAM experience with Auth0, Okta, OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, multi-tenant architecture, RBAC/ABAC/policy-based access control, SAML 2.0, OIDC, and SCIM is highly desired but not required
- Direct experience with Claude Code is preferred; comparable experience with Cursor or GitHub Copilot transfers well
