Mathematical Physicist creating and evaluating research-level physics challenges for Mercor’s frontier AI training projects. Applying specialized mathematical physics methods with rigorous written reasoning.

Responsibilities:

  • Create, solve, review, or audit research-level physics problems in the applicant's specific subfield
  • Produce complete written reasoning that another specialist can independently follow and verify
  • Work on benchmark challenges covering special functions, integrable systems, permutation combinatorics, or conformal geometry
  • Apply relevant mathematical and computational methods to assigned problems
  • Complete the application form with education, research experience, method self-attestation, and supporting publications
  • Participate in a short live alignment call if required
  • Complete a 30–45 minute assessment only if needed
  • Collaborate asynchronously on AI training and enhancement projects

Requirements:

  • PhD in mathematical physics, theoretical physics, or mathematics (hard requirement)
  • Postdoctoral researchers, research scientists, and junior faculty are strongest fits
  • Senior PhD students with a strong first-author record may apply
  • Published work on at least one of the specified phenomena, not merely adjacent topics
  • Verifiable publication record with three to five representative papers, including arXiv IDs or DOIs; first author strongly preferred
  • Publications must demonstrate relevant methods in special function analysis, integrability, combinatorics, or geometry
  • Working proficiency with LaTeX, Python, SymPy, and Jupyter
  • Some familiarity with an agentic coding extension in VS Code is useful
  • English proficiency at B2 or above, including written reasoning
  • Commitment of 10 hours per week across an 8 to 10 week window
  • Ability to work as an independent contractor
  • Applicants must not require H1-B or STEM OPT support
  • Must provide author position and demonstrated methods for each selected research area

Benefits:

  • Remote and asynchronous work with no fixed hours
  • Flexible schedule
  • Weekly payments via Stripe or Wise based on services rendered
  • Opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers
  • Work on projects training and enhancing AI systems
  • Reasonable accommodations upon request
