Job Description

Peer review operations specialist supporting PLOS’s open-science publishing workflows. Maintaining manuscript quality, vendor performance, and timely journal operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure timely and efficient peer review of submissions
  • Resolve or appropriately escalate queries and concerns from vendors, Customer Care, and PLOS colleagues
  • Identify and remove barriers to submission
  • Identify workflow inefficiencies, variations, and backlogs
  • Ensure manuscripts meet requirements and current policies and procedures
  • Troubleshoot manuscript, workflow, and system issues
  • Provide expertise and advice and escalate issues when appropriate
  • Raise data-driven recommendations for journal operations and workflow improvements
  • Maintain standard journal workflows and implement approved process updates
  • Contribute to workflow projects and initiate proposals as requested
  • Undertake operations projects and initiatives as directed by the Peer Review Operations Manager
  • Liaise daily with vendor representatives and monitor quality and timeliness against targets and KPIs
  • Contribute to operational research outputs related to PLOS’s mission
  • Work with international colleagues and uphold contributor experience for authors, editors, and reviewers

Requirements:

  • Prior experience in peer-reviewed scholarly publishing
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of Excel, Word, file types and file conversions
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines while maintaining quality and accuracy
  • Ability to set priorities and work independently
  • Ability to work constructively with vendors, authors, editors, customers, and international colleagues
  • Interest in science and advancing scientific knowledge
  • A university degree or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of peer review and manuscript management database systems is desirable; Editorial Manager proficiency is a plus
  • Knowledge of CRM software such as Salesforce is desirable
  • Awareness of and commitment to open science is desirable
  • Ability to undertake some domestic and international travel
