Job Description
Principal engineer defining integration and data architecture for GHX, a healthcare supply-chain exchange. Guiding event-driven systems, APIs, databases, and monolith decomposition.
Responsibilities:
- Define GHX’s integration patterns, including outbox, saga, CDC, event-carried state transfer, dual-write mitigation, and choreography versus orchestration
- Guide service boundary design, shared reference data handling, and prevention of shared-database coupling
- Own messaging and eventing architecture, including topic and queue design, schema contracts, partitioning, retention, consumer groups, dead-letter handling, replay, and monitoring
- Lead replacement of GHX’s homegrown event bus with a cloud-native messaging platform
- Guide streaming versus batch trade-offs and event-driven pipeline migrations
- Establish REST API design standards and own API governance
- Define API transition patterns including versioned routing, canary rollouts, and gateway configuration
- Review service designs for evolvability and downstream interface cost
- Guide schema design, data modeling, datastore selection, NoSQL access-pattern design, and data ownership
- Advise on ORM versus raw queries, performant data access, schema evolution, replication, syndication, CDC, change streams, materialized views, and read models
- Run design reviews, workshops, and office hours
- Produce decision records, design guides, and reference implementations
- Present architectural trade-offs and technical risk to engineering leadership, product, and senior stakeholders
- Partner with application teams during GHX’s monolith decomposition into independently deployable services
- Define long-term technical standards for system integration and data architecture
Requirements:
- 10+ years building distributed systems as a hands-on individual contributor, including writing and shipping production code
- Deep experience with event-driven architecture and distributed systems
- Experience with pub/sub and messaging infrastructure such as Kafka, AWS SQS/SNS/EventBridge, or equivalents
- Experience with integration patterns including outbox, CDC, saga, and event sourcing
- Knowledge of idempotency, consistency trade-offs, and operational failure handling
- Hands-on AWS experience with SQS, SNS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, RDS/Aurora, API Gateway, and Lambda
- Strong data architecture fundamentals across relational and NoSQL databases
- Experience with datastore selection, schema and access-pattern design, ORM trade-offs, and performant data access at scale
- Experience designing REST APIs with versioning, backward compatibility, data contracts, and CI/CD contract validation
- Experience working directly with application teams during service decomposition
- Track record of establishing integration and data standards across an engineering organization
- Strong written and verbal communication across engineering, product, and senior stakeholder levels
- Heavy personal investment in AI-assisted and agentic development, including substantial use of coding agents and concrete examples of improved speed or outcomes
