Job Description
Principal Software Engineer designing scalable software architecture and reusable components for H&R Block’s tax applications. Leading technical direction, complex development, and team mentoring.
Responsibilities:
- Provide technical expertise to design current and future architectural software components and products supporting H&R Block business applications
- Use current tools, technologies, programming languages, coding standards and best practices to develop new product features
- Drive planning, design and implementation of strategic product direction
- Design and maintain documentation for complex software components
- Drive internal system architecture decisions and lead discussions on architectural changes
- Develop optimal solutions for complex changes
- Translate high-level concepts into detailed architectural approaches
- Lead product design features supporting scalability, usability and performance
- Interpret complex business and functional requirements and direct technical specifications and product requirements
- Establish and enforce coding and development best practices within the team
- Design and develop reusable code components
- Maintain and improve knowledge of relevant technologies, algorithms, languages, design methodologies, third-party tools, platforms, hardware compatibility and operating systems
- Mentor and coach team members on technological advances and competing technologies
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering or related field or the equivalent through a combination of education and work experience
- Ten to twelve years experience developing applications, including experience developing/maintaining projects
- Knowledge of various platforms and ability to evaluate technical architecture related to application software
- Two years experience in a lead developer role with a strong technical design and development background
- Knowledge of object-oriented design techniques, UML, software architecture, complex pointer manipulation and memory management of complex structures
- Experience creating technical specifications
- Ability to work independently and determine logical solutions
- Knowledge of process and data modeling concepts
- Experience using Word, Visio, Excel and PowerPoint
- Effective time management, planning and organization skills
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, projects and priorities in a fast-paced matrix-managed environment
- Proven creative, analytical and detail-oriented abilities
- Strong leadership skills
- Ability to function as a team leader, coordinate activities and communicate information effectively
- Ability to plan and schedule tasks for team members to meet project objectives
- Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to interact with technical and non-technical project team members in various locations
