Job Description
Principal Engineer directing architecture for Terrific Live, a social commerce platform for retailers and eCommerce brands. Building scalable AI, real-time video, data, and commerce systems.
Responsibilities:
- Set the technical direction and own end-to-end architecture for Terrific’s social commerce platform
- Own architecture across backend, frontend, data, AI, and real-time systems
- Drive engineering standards covering code quality, testing, observability, security, and operational excellence
- Mentor engineers and grow organizational technical depth
- Design and implement services and features end-to-end from database to UI
- Build rapid prototypes and tackle high-risk problems in live video reliability, real-time engagement, commerce integrations, and AI-powered experiences
- Evolve the technology stack across React, Angular, Node.js, TypeScript, GCP, Firebase, Firestore, Cloud Functions, BigQuery, and Pub/Sub
- Architect global 24/7 live operations for uptime, latency, cost, and graceful degradation
- Build scalable B2B2C systems for enterprise customers and consumer audiences across regions and languages
- Partner with Product and Data on experimentation infrastructure, A/B testing, and measurement
- Partner with Product and Design from concept through launch
- Represent engineering with strategic customers and partners on technical topics
- Improve the team through design reviews, technical writing, mentorship, and hiring
- Terrific Live helps retailers and eCommerce brands grow revenue through live, interactive, social-native shopping experiences on their own websites
- Related role responsibilities include building carousels, players, live experiences, integrations, SDKs, embeds, tracking, attribution, reporting, and configurable solutions
Requirements:
- 10+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, with a track record of leading at staff/principal level at high-scale products
- Expert-level Node.js and TypeScript
- Strong frontend experience in React and/or Angular
- Deep experience designing and operating distributed, real-time systems in production, 24/7, under load
- Strong data engineering instincts: SQL/NoSQL, event-driven architectures, and analytical stores such as BigQuery or equivalent
- Hands-on experience building or shipping AI/ML-powered features in production
- Experience on GCP, including Firebase, Cloud Functions, Firestore, Realtime Database, and Pub/Sub, is a strong advantage
- Experience with commerce platforms such as Shopify or WooCommerce and/or live video/streaming infrastructure is a plus
- Excellent judgment on trade-offs between scope, speed, performance, and UX
- Clear, calm communication skills
- Deep experience in at least one of Terrific’s three commercial pillars — eCommerce, Marketing, or Media — and enough fluency across the other two to contribute credibly from day 1
- Fluency in written and spoken English required
- For the related Senior Full Stack Developer role: 5+ years of development experience, strong frontend focus, senior-level React and TypeScript, and professional English
