Job Description
Senior Mobile Software Architect designing iOS, Android, and cross-platform systems for NPR’s public media network. Leading scalable personalization, delivery pipelines, governance, and operational resilience.
Responsibilities:
- Define and implement shared architectural patterns and modular design systems across native iOS and Android codebases and cross-platform integrations
- Lead platform-to-client architecture for personalized content delivery across owned digital properties and member station networks
- Conduct technical evaluations of custom builds versus vendor solutions
- Introduce modern technologies and establish architectural standards across divisions
- Provide technical oversight across cross-divisional product roadmaps, project proposals, and OKR planning cycles
- Conduct architectural proposals and code reviews
- Integrate privacy compliance, security standards, CDN caching strategies, and cloud cost optimization
- Participate in automated deployments across QA, UAT, and production environments
- Join the developer on-call rotation to diagnose and resolve critical incidents
- Author documented, resilient code and reusable core libraries
- Assist in onboarding, training, and interviewing software engineering staff
- Advocate for efficient agile processes and inclusive team practices
Requirements:
- 7+ years of progressive software engineering experience, including designing and leading technical architecture for complex, multi-team platform environments
- Deep proficiency in native mobile architecture for iOS and Android
- Proficiency with Swift, Kotlin, Java, or Objective-C
- Experience designing high-traffic, resilient distributed systems
- Experience with RESTful/GraphQL APIs and client-server integration patterns
- Experience architecting media playback and streaming protocols
- Experience with CDN configurations and cloud infrastructure such as AWS or GCP
- Experience integrating GDPR and CPRA privacy compliance standards
- Experience with cloud cost optimization frameworks in high-availability environments
- Experience with Git, continuous integration pipelines, and automated testing frameworks
- Ability to translate complex business and product requirements into architectural designs across multiple engineering teams
- Ability to conduct code reviews and promote engineering best practices
- Ability to diagnose and resolve production incidents during on-call rotation
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical work experience
- Preferred: familiarity with Go or PHP in event-driven or microservice architectures
- Preferred: experience with edge media caches, relational databases/SQL, or open-source software
