Job Description
Staff Attorney at The Hartford independently managing tort defense cases throughout Texas. Remote position requiring travel for court appearances and strong legal expertise.
Responsibilities:
- Independent handling of insurance defense docket of small claims, subro, and personal-lines auto cases throughout Texas from inception through and including trial.
- Analyze legal and factual issues, conduct extensive and develop well-reasoned legal research.
- Independently create and present defense strategies on behalf of clients.
- Prepare pleadings, written discovery, motions and briefs in support of defense strategies with autonomy.
- Attend hearings and other court appearances, depositions, and trial with autonomy.
- Partner with our Claims Partners to achieve the best results for our Hartford insured.
- Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice and other services to clients on legal and factual issues.
- Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel, and co-counsel with professional diplomacy and discretion.
- Facilitate prompt, efficient and effective disposition of assigned cases.
- Independently prepare and present witnesses and evidence at trials, hearings, arbitrations and alternative dispute resolutions.
- Research, draft, file and argue substantive motions on behalf of clients.
- Attend continuing legal education seminars in order to maintain high level of professional expertise.
Requirements:
- 2 plus years of legal practice experience handling tort defense cases.
- JD from accredited law school and license to practice in the state of Texas.
- First-chair small claims trial experience is preferred; second-chair jury trial experience is a plus.
- Positive-minded and collaborative team-player attitude.
- Strong legal research and writing skills.
- Solid MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook).
- Self-directed with excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
- Strong computer skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software as required.
