Job Description

Director of Development at Climate Defiance focusing on donor engagement to combat climate change. Building relationships and securing funding through strategic donor engagement efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead plans to build our individual donor program, with an emphasis on four and five-figure gifts;
  • Manage a portfolio of 75+ current and prospective donors, regularly meeting with donors through in-person, phone, video and through email updates;
  • Identify new donors through Climate Defiance’s events, our database of activists and supporters, as well new avenues;
  • Manage our development team member and their event planning and major gifts responsibilities, providing training and ongoing support;
  • Support our Executive Director with his fundraising responsibilities and relationships, including preparing the ED for high value donor conversations and asks.
  • Develop systems to effectively cultivate, steward, and track donor relationships;
  • Develop strategies for high-capacity prospects;
  • Engage with attendees from VIP events, setting up meetings, facilitating introductions, and more.
  • Maintain our database, driving a strong donor management system, and tracking and analyzing trends;
  • Play a role in driving our small donor fundraising strategies;
  • Provide support as needed around other organizational initiatives, such as staff recruitment.
  • Participate and actively engage in Climate Defiance’s leadership team, providing strategic input into the direction of the work.
  • Regularly travel to cities for donor meetings and events (estimated at 35-50% time on the road, depending on where you are based).

Requirements:

  • At least 11 years of work experience with a significant background in development and individual giving programs, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
  • Passionate about addressing the climate crisis.
  • Have carried a portfolio of individual donors and had success in managing and growing a portfolio.
  • Successfully secured gifts up to and including 5-figures.
  • Understanding of cultivating and nurturing meaningful relationships with donors.
  • Played a role in scaling up a major donor program.
  • Success identifying new high-capacity prospects, including related research.
  • Comfortable and excited to travel for donor events and meetings.
  • Some experience with small donor fundraising.
  • Results-driven, entrepreneurial, and excited to join a fast-paced setting.
