Job Description
Senior Software Engineer building scalable, AI-enabled software for PowerSchool’s cloud-based K-12 education platform. Owning complex features, system design, testing, and technical mentorship.
Responsibilities:
- Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain software applications and services
- Own delivery of complex features, services, or components independently
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to translate business and user needs into technical solutions
- Contribute to system and solution design, architecture decisions, technical tradeoffs, and implementation approaches
- Use AI-assisted development tools for coding, debugging, documentation, testing, and analysis
- Participate in code reviews and ensure coding standards, quality expectations, and secure development practices
- Troubleshoot and resolve software defects, performance issues, and reliability concerns
- Contribute across all phases of the software development lifecycle
- Create and maintain unit tests, integration tests, and other validation approaches
- Apply software design principles, patterns, algorithms, and data structures
- Improve development workflows, automation, observability, and engineering efficiency
- Explore AI and machine learning capabilities and recommend practical applications
- Mentor junior engineers through technical guidance and code review feedback
- Contribute to continuous improvement, responsible AI usage, collaboration, and technical excellence
Requirements:
- Minimum of 5+ years of relevant and related work experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent, or equivalent years of relevant work experience
- Travel occasionally, up to 5-10%, for key moments such as team summits, training, conferences, etc.
- This position is subject to company on call policies which constitutes working hours outside of the normal workday as needed
- Additional experience may be substitute for an advanced Degree
- Proficiency in at least one or more programming languages such as TypeScript, Java, C#, Python, or other relevant tech stacks
- Experience delivering production-grade software and independently owning significant features or technical components
- Demonstrated ability to work on problems of diverse scope, analyze technical issues, and apply sound judgment to identify effective solutions
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools for coding, testing, debugging, documentation, or analysis
- Ability to apply AI tools responsibly with consideration for security, privacy, reliability, maintainability, and appropriate human oversight
- Experience with version control, CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, and Agile or Kanban methodologies
- Strong understanding of software design principles, design patterns, algorithms, and data structures
- Familiarity with SQL and database concepts; hands-on database experience preferred
- Familiarity with OWASP threats and mitigation techniques and secure coding practices
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment with limited day-to-day supervision
