Job Description
Senior Videogame Designer shaping gameplay, systems, mechanics, levels, and UX for Seismic Squirrel’s narrative-driven RPGs. Collaborating remotely across design, engineering, art, writing, and testing teams.
Responsibilities:
- Design gameplay, systems, mechanics, maps, and levels for narrative-driven RPG videogames
- Guide the design of gameplay systems and mechanics, including unit balancing and in-game economy
- Design and implement game levels and missions, including mission objectives and level layouts
- Support integration of art and narrative assets in Unity
- Preside over design meetings and document game designs and requirements
- Collaborate with development, engineering, writing, art, testing, and management teams
- Communicate needed mechanics to Engineering
- Maintain outstanding UX quality and champion intuitive onboarding experiences
- Participate in internal game testing and feedback
- Communicate progress and problems, define deliverables, and help set project timelines and expectations
- Identify and resolve user experience issues
- Identify analytics instrumentation opportunities and interpret analytics data to improve UX
- Work during core hours of 9:30 AM–4:30 PM Pacific and attend relevant team meetings
- Collaborate with international partners during occasional late evenings, nights, or early mornings
- Occasional travel may be expected
Requirements:
- 10+ years of professional videogame design experience
- Must have successfully shipped at least one videogame in a Senior Designer role
- Experience across the full lifecycle of game development: concept, design, prototype, production, content creation, testing, polish, launch, and support
- Strong understanding of combat and travel systems and mechanics and level design best practices
- Expert proficiency in Unity
- Experience integrating and implementing narrative within gameplay
- Experience with professional narrative authoring tools such as Articy, Arcweave, or Pixel Crushers
- Understanding of developing games for PC and console
- Strong written, visual, and verbal English communication and presentation skills
- Experience applying UML in design
- Proficiency in Atlassian Jira and Confluence
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Visio
- Ability to work remotely using collaboration tools
- Ergonomic and secure workspace separate from personal activities and roommates during work hours
- Must reside within UTC-4 to UTC-8 timezones
- Must be authorized to work in the USA or Canada
- H-1B transfers and sponsorships are not available
- Bonus: proficiency with Adobe, Blender, 3ds Max, Adobe XD, or Figma
