Job Description
Technical UI Designer building scalable, responsive Unreal Engine UI systems for an AAA development partner. Implementing MVVM-driven interfaces, controller navigation, and performant cross-platform experiences.
Responsibilities:
- Break features and wireframes into clear, scoped implementation tasks, identifying unknowns and dependencies early
- Build and maintain UI in Unreal Engine using UMG and Widget Blueprints
- Create UI logic using Blueprint scripting
- Architect reusable component systems that remain flexible as designs and requirements evolve
- Implement data-driven UI using ViewModels, view bindings, and MVVM principles in collaboration with UI Engineering
- Work within established C++-driven UI systems and understand how data moves between game systems and presentation
- Build UI accounting for screen sizes, safe areas, localization, accessibility, responsive scaling, and dynamic content
- Design controller-first navigation while supporting multiple input methods and platforms
- Profile UI performance and understand runtime and memory costs associated with UMG, Slate, C++, textures, and other UI systems
- Diagnose and investigate UI hitches and work with Engineering when deeper technical investigation is required
- Collaborate with UX, UI Art, Engineering, and Production throughout feature development
- Improve workflows, pipelines, documentation, and implementation practices as the team and UI systems evolve
- Advocate for player experience while understanding technical delivery constraints
Requirements:
- Professional experience implementing UI in Unreal Engine and UMG
- Strong understanding of MVVM, ViewModels, data binding, and separation of data from presentation, or closely comparable architectural patterns
- Working knowledge of C++ fundamentals and data types sufficient to understand and collaborate within C++-based UI systems
- Strong technical UI implementation skills and understanding of UI architecture and component-based design
- Strong knowledge of UI and UX fundamentals, including layout, composition, hierarchy, interaction patterns, responsive behavior, and state management
- Ability to anticipate edge cases including localization, text overflow, dynamic content, scaling, changing data, and different input methods
- Experience designing UI for controller navigation and other input methods
- Experience considering performance and runtime cost during UI implementation
- Strong cross-functional communication skills and experience working closely with Design, Art, Engineering, and Production
- Professional Unreal Engine experience; candidates should not need to learn Unreal Engine on the job
- Experience shipping UI on PC is highly relevant
- Experience across console and/or mobile platforms is valuable
- Preferred: Experience using Unreal Insights
- Preferred: Experience shipping UI on multiple platforms
- Preferred: Experience with UI materials, animation, and motion
- Preferred: Experience with Figma or similar prototyping tools
