Job Description
Accounting Manager overseeing full-cycle accounting, grants, payroll, and audits for a nonprofit digital media lab. Supporting civic engagement with BIPOC and low-income communities.
Responsibilities:
- Support the Sr. Accounting Manager with Central Team and Partner transactions in NetSuite
- Assess the accounting system control environment to mitigate risks and optimize financial workflows
- Conduct internal reviews of accounting documentation, processes, and general ledger schedules
- Support creation and management of internal controls to ensure data integrity
- Identify financial control gaps and recommend systems and procedural improvements
- Design and execute corrective action plans
- Manage, update, and enforce accounting methods and organizational policies
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and IRS guidelines for nonprofit financial statements and internal controls
- Oversee technical accounting for nonprofit grants and for-profit earned revenue
- Ensure ASC 958/ASC 606 revenue recognition, fund restriction tracking, and potential sales tax compliance
- Monitor grant spending and compliance with donor-imposed restrictions
- Maintain schedules tracking net assets released from restrictions
- Liaise with Payroll on multi-entity C3, C4, and P.B.C. allocations
- Reconcile payroll registers to the general ledger and manage intercompany allocations
- Ensure accurate benefits and tax accounting
- Provide the Director of Finance with guidance on technical accounting, internal audit findings, and regulatory matters
- Collaborate with Finance, People, and Development teams
- Lead internal audit preparation and collaborate with external auditors on annual audit and tax filing requests, including Form 990 and K-1
- Remove barriers for and hold the Finance team accountable to equity, belonging, and service standards
- Support other manager-level Finance work in a dynamic startup environment
- Help advance anti-racist organizational goals and make programs more inclusive
- Serve as a resource to partner networks and facilitate knowledge sharing
- Take an entrepreneurial approach to work and learning new skills
- Seek opportunities to deepen skills on current and emerging platforms and lean startup methodology
Requirements:
- At least 3 years of experience managing full-cycle accounting processes
- Ideally, background in internal audit and process improvement
- Specific expertise in grant revenue recognition and payroll-accounting reconciliation
- Keen attention to detail and track record of delivering error-free work
- Strong written and verbal stakeholder communication skills
- Ability to develop compliant, creative finance and accounting solutions
- Commitment to social change and civic engagement with BIPOC and low-income communities
- Interest in digital media platforms including TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, podcasts, and streaming shows
- Must follow COVID safety protocols and be fully vaccinated and boosted, except Florida and Texas employees where vaccination is encouraged but not required due to state laws
